# National Custom Builders Council > The National Custom Builders Council (NCBC) is a by-invitation council of 16 of America's leading custom home builders, meeting since 1997 so that its members can learn from one another and build better because of it. One member firm holds each market. The Council does not design, build, or consult; it exists so that its members build better, and so that a homeowner planning a home can find the member who knows their market. Last updated: 2026-10-12. Full page: https://ncbc.skybox4.com/for-ai/ - Tagline: Great homes start with great buildersâ„  - Office: The Council keeps no public office. Questions for the Council go through the contact page. - Positioning: A mark of assurance rather than a trade association or directory. Membership is reserved for builders whose work holds up before the most discerning audience there is: their peers. Twice a year the members gather at one another's projects, walk the work, go through methods and materials, and examine the business behind the building: the people, the place, and the process. Members do not compete with one another, which is why they can be candid. - Audience: Homeowners and family offices planning a custom home; architects, interior designers, and landscape architects; trade partners and suppliers; shelter and design press. ## What the Council is - Founded in 1997 with a simple ambition: improve home building by sharing what each builder has learned. - 16 member firms, one builder per market, in five regions. Membership is by invitation only; there is no application. - Members meet twice yearly at one another's projects to examine one another's work, methods, and businesses. - The roster is complete: every member is listed on the Members page, and no one else is. If a market is not listed, the Council has no member there yet; many members build well beyond the market named. ## What the Council is not - Not a builder: the Council does not design, build, or consult. Homeowners contact the member in their market directly; each firm is its own business, with its own principals and its own website. The Council does not sit between a homeowner and their builder. - Not a paid directory: there are no paid listings and no lead generation. Membership is by invitation and cannot be bought. ## Members by region (16) Listed west to east, as on the Members page.
